To keep at least part of the network up even in case of DDoS you can have a hub but not expose it's IP address. In other words, you have a hub.example.net, but don't publish the A/AAAA record in DNS for it. Your servers can still link to this hub by IP address. This way the hub cannot be attacked because attackers don't know the IP address or even which provider to attack.
